Do you play a winter sport?

Interested to know if you guys (particularly David and the more professional players) participate in a winter sport. In Australia its been tradition that kids grow up playing cricket in summer and football (AFL) in winter. Personally i used to play both, but have had the odd season off football. Im 24 and must admit my best cricket seasons have come when i wasnt playing football through the winter. I find that after each season has finished you just want to wind down and not get stuck into the new sport straight away. So for me having the winter to relax and start some pre season training from July has worked quite effectively.

I used to play football in the winter, but I gave that up because I hated rolling around in the mud in the cold and wet. I had a go at rugby and basketball but was never serious.

Since I was 17 I have been training regularly, either in gyms or just running and doing bodyweight exercises. So I suppose you could call that my winter sport, it's certainly another obsession of mine.

I play football occasionally, although I'm not that mad on it. I play golf if its not raining. But mainly I just have cricket nets and baseball practice from November - December and February - March.

The thing is, I am so busy during the summer - three games of cricket and two games of baseball a week - that I have to try and fit an entire year's worth of socialising into 6 months!

I play Table Tennis. When I first began work as a teenager, in the basement of the building were 20 Table Tennis tables. My father dropped me off an hour early on the way to his job and picked me up half an hour after I finished. Along the way he picked up 2 of my friends. The only thing we could do to entertain ourselves was play table tennis. Pretty soon it became before work, lunchtime and after work (more than 2 hours a day). Amazingly when cricket season came around all 3 of us vastly improved our batting all of us either doubled or trippled our season batting averages and we all moved from the 3rds up into the 1sts. Playing Table tennis keeps you fit, improves your flexibility, improves you hand eye coordination and is there is very little chance of injury threatening your cricket.
I also played football (Aussie Rules) until I was 28. The good thing about that is I was always very fit for the cricket season.
I still play Table Tennis, but after 40 years of cricket I have retired from playing.
