37. Review, reflect, plan and improve. At the end of the day’s play, and after practicing, update your cricket journal. Review the basics and record any that you neglected or need to work on and how you plan to improve your game at practice. Review your journal before you play next and concentrate on not making the same mistakes as previously.

Cricket Basic Number 36: Good Boundaries Make Good Sports

36. Mark boundary lines with flags or some other visible marker if possible. If a fielder trips over a marker running forward after taking and claiming a catch then his captain should probably call the batsman back.

35. For the record, in real cricket you don’t have to call “O.C.” (Over Coming) or “creaseleave” when you leave your crease but not for the purpose of running.

Cricket Basic Number 34: Play Real Back-Yard Cricket.

34. Play real back-yard cricket. Reward good batting technique (that is to say, reward straight drives but punish hitting the ball in the air) and play with a ball that lets you bowl bouncers (preferably on a shortened pitch with a ball that swings outrageously (eg indoor cricket balls or tennis balls with electrical tape on one side).

Cricket Basic Number 33: Don't Get Hit by the Batsman in the Next Net

33. In loose hanging nets don’t bend over to pick up a ball if it is near the net and there is a chance the adjacent batsmen could hit the ball into you through the net. Pick your moment and use the end of your bat to roll the ball back towards you in a safe position to pick up or put the toe of your bat against the net to keep it and any balls hit at a safe distance from you.
